
PROJECT SURVEYOR / CAD OPERATORScale 4-5 (£16,371-£19,092 pa) FURTHER INFORMATION Archaeological Services WYASArchaeological Services WYAS is the technical services arm of the West Yorkshire Archaeology Service, formed in 1986 from the West Yorkshire Metropolitan County Council Archaeology Unit. Although the organisation continues to be administered via the West Yorkshire Joint Services Committee, it is run entirely on an independent and self-financing commercial basis. The organisation is regularly contracted by the development and extraction industries in the preparation and execution of archaeological mitigation strategies, as well as providing a range of services to the heritage industry. Archaeological Services WYAS employs 40 full-time staff. The total number of employees fluctuates according to work levels, although in recent years the workforce has, at times, approached 100 staff. Archaeological Services WYAS offer a comprehensive professional service throughout the UK, although most excavation work is carried out in the North of England. We are able to address archaeological requirements quickly and efficiently, having the facilities and staff to tackle a wide range of work, from desk-based assessments to large-scale excavation projects. Recent projects have included work in advance of road and rail schemes, mineral extraction, urban and commercial developments and linear developments, such as pipelines, power lines and flood defences. Ian Roberts (Principal Archaeologist) and Dave Berg and Paul Wheelhouse (Senior Managers) direct the work of the Archaeological Services WYAS on a day-to-day basis. HeadquartersThe organisation is located in new purpose-built accommodation at Nepshaw Lane South, Morley, Leeds, close to junction 27 on the M62 motorway. Head Office accommodation consists of a fully equipped first floor suite of offices, including a research library, drawing office and laboratory facilities with faunal and botanical reference collections. A separate computer room is equipped with graphics computers, scanners and large format plotters dedicated to AutoCAD, graphics and desktop publishing work and also houses the main network and Intranet server. The ground floor includes a fully equipped dark room and photographic studio, a wet laboratory for processing soil and environmental samples, wet tanks, monitored cold and constant humidity walk-in storage facilities, and storage rooms for equipment, finds and archives. Staff facilities include a kitchen, lounge, changing rooms and showers. A new Joint Service wing within our office complex provides conference and meeting room facilities suitable for interviews, video conferencing, seminars, lectures and staff training. Within Joint Services, Wakefield MDC act as lead authority from whom Archaeological Services WYAS purchase, via service level agreements, a number of support services including health and safety, legal, insurance, personnel and financial accounting and auditing. Overall Purpose of PostTo implement, direct and co-ordinate the on-site data collection of digitally captured surveys using Total Station theodolites and GPS instruments, on a wide range of archaeological projects, to produce site illustrations using instrument specific software for data download and transfer to AutoCAD or GIS. To be able to manipulate and criticise captured data, and to be conversant with archaeological surveying techniques and standards. To contribute to the production of client and publication reports using AutoCAD. To maintain and upgrade the survey software and hardware requirements. To routinely enhance and programme in the survey training of excavation/building recording staff. The post-holder will also assist in the preparation of research designs, mitigation strategies, estimates and quotes for tender submissions. Personal RequirementsThe successful candidate will be expected to have a sound, broad-based knowledge of British Archaeology and some knowledge of typical site types found in the North of England. Applicants should have at least two years post-graduate archaeological experience, conducting large surveys for excavation and/or building recording work. This should have included topographical (earthwork) surveys, as well as site setting out and tie-in. An in-depth working knowledge (self-taught or qualified) of AutoCAD and its use and application in archaeology is also required. On-site excavation experience should have been gained on a variety of site types. The post-holder will be expected to supervise and co-ordinate site surveys and to attend meetings with clients and their representatives. The post-holder will be expected to work on several projects simultaneously and to carry out non-routine work. They will be required to assist with project timetabling. The post-holder may also have contact with the staff of Sites and Monuments Records/HERs, English Heritage, heritage consultancies, museums, landowners, local societies, special interest groups and members of the public. Consequently, there is a need for good oral and written communication skills. Salary and Working ConditionsSalary will be in the range £16,371 - £19,092 per annum (SCP 20-25). The normal working week is 37 hours, Monday to Friday. Flexible working arrangements are in place, although these are normally suspended for on-site excavation work. Occasionally the post-holder will be required to work irregular hours, evenings or weekends, for which overtime payments or time in lieu arrangements will be made. From time to time the post-holder will be required to work away from home. Annual leave entitlement is 28 days per annum, increasing to 30 days after 5 years continuous service. Sickness payments will be made dependent upon length of service. The post is superannuable at a contributing rate (to the West Yorkshire Pension Fund) of 6%.
