WATCHING BRIEFS

Watching briefs are usually required for development sites where the supposed archaeological potential has not been realised after a phase of earlier investigative work, or where the known archaeological potential requires limited clarification.

Monitoring

Archaeological Services WYAS has vast experience in carrying out such monitoring work, which normally only requires the attendance of one archaeologist during the ground disturbance or demolition elements of a development. The duration of monitoring is determined by the size and impact of the development proposal and can range in scope from a single visit to permanent presence on site over several weeks.

Watching briefs are required on a wide variety of sites. Examples include urban redevelopments, pipeline laying, road building, housing and construction sites through to small-scale domestic extensions. In common throughout is the potential that disturbance caused by the development may inadvertently impact upon archaeological deposits.

The archaeologist in attendance will observe ground disturbance or demolition work as it takes place. If, during this time, features of archaeological potential are encountered then a very rapid recording exercise of the exposed archaeological deposits will be undertaken in order not to delay unduly the site operations.

Our watching brief service includes:

  • Close liaison with the contractor
  • Rapid and considered deployment
  • Competitive full and half-day rates
  • Appropriate level of reporting
  • Itemised cost break-down inclusive of any contingencies

Reporting

The cost of reporting the results of an archaeological watching brief is directly proportional to the time spent on the site, although it is of course related to the nature of any findings made. We are normally able to offer a minimum and maximum quote for the production of the report text and accompanying illustrations. Also, we can offer contingency costing for the various analyses that may need to be implemented in the event of the work yielding important artefacts that need specialist attention. Contingencies are infrequently required but in circumstances where there is a need this will only be carried out following written confirmation from the contractor.
