DESK-BASED ASSESSMENT
A desk-based assessment undertaken by Archaeological Services WYAS will involve the collation of all readily available archaeological and historical information for a proposal area and its immediate environs.
Collation of information
Research will include the interrogation of the following data sources:
- County or District Historic Environment Record (HER)
- National Archaeological Record
- County or District Archive Offices
- Local Museum records
- Local Studies libraries
- Local Archaeological and Historical Society collections
- Oral evidence
- Engineering, geological and mineral extraction records
- A walk-over survey of the proposal area
The types of information considered will include:

- Records of previous archaeological work
- Artefact find spots
- Aerial photographs
- Early maps
- Place and field-name evidence
- Township and Parish studies
- Scheduled Ancient Monument records
- Listed Building records
- Early photographs
- Field records

Reporting
Report presentation varies with the content but it will normally include:
- Period syntheses (from prehistoric to industrial)
- Location maps
- A gazetteer of all known sites and find-spots
- Distribution maps cross-referenced to the gazetteer
- Copies of relevant early maps
- Implications and mitigation proposals
- A full list of sources consulted and a bibliography
