West Yorkshire Archaeology Advisory Service - The Romans in West Yorkshire
These moulds were used by the Romans to make copper spoons. The two halves of the mould would be fastened together and hot metal poured into the cavity between them. When the metal was cool the mould would be broken open and the spoon could be taken out and finished off. Finds of copper spoons are not uncommon on Roman sites, but no other Roman spoon moulds of this type have been found anywhere else in the world.
