West Yorkshire Archaeology Advisory Service - The Romans in West Yorkshire
These large vessels were used to bring wine or other types of food and drink into Roman Britain from the Continent. The point at the base is designed to help empty the amphora. In effect it is a third handle which allows the amphora to be gripped easily at the bottom, before turning it upside down to empty it. This example is about a metre high.
