The photograph shows the outline of the granary revealed by archaeologists at Castleford. The empty spaces are the foundation trenches for low walls which would have raised the floor of the building off the ground to keep the contents safe from rats and mice. The number of foundation trenches is an indicator of the weight stored on the floor above.
