West Yorkshire Archaeology Advisory Service - The Romans in West Yorkshire

The fort at Castleford was protected by an earth rampart. This photograph shows how the rampart was built. Turves would be stacked at the front and back of the stone foundations (showing up white on the photograph). The space would be infilled by earth dug out of the surrounding ditch and timbers used to strengthen it. This may have been topped by a wooden walkway for the soldiers to patrol around.
