This drawing gives an impression of what the fort gates at Castleford might have looked like. Some idea of the depth of the ditches and the height of the bank can be gathered from the archaeological excavations, but there is no way to know for certain what the wooden walkway and gate towers looked like. The style shown here is taken from Trajan's column in Rome. However, the campaign which the monument celebrates, took place in a warmer climate than that of Britain, and it is possible that in this country the Romans roofed over the tops of the towers to give their sentries some protection from the weather.
